Web Application Logo, Graphics, & UX Design

WellDirect is a workflow BPM tool used for deviation management and knowledge capture around a production phase on a well/wellbore drilling operation. It allows for a chain of responsibility management over regulatory inspections and requirements. This tool runs on top of the Microsoft stack, specifically within SharePoint 2010.

The Process

For this project I had to dive deep into the world of drilling and the key personas involved in the management and work of well operations. These personas were then flushed out with assistance from SMEs and other industry resources. Truly understanding what the market needed and how the tool usage would impact the industry guided the decision making. Myself and additional team members on the project from the development team created the basic conceptual path that each persona would take while using the software. We then created several wireframes outlining the addition of users, associating users in groups, creating workflows, executing the workflows, and managing deviations in compliance while running workflows. I also, created a SharePoint themes from the company style implementation for web applications. Themes are a mix of THMX files and CSS, as we leveraged third party controls to give a rich UI and increased customization of the component within the application. As we reached the end of the first release, I created the identity and visual graphics to enhance UI further.

The Results

Now the application is in process of reaching release two with a stronger momentum than initially. We are moving into faster ways to create customization of the UI by leveraging DOT LESS stylesheets and a custom interface for selecting the “theme” that fits best into a company’s current instance of SharePoint 2010.

Web Application Icons

WellPlan Next Gen is a Halliburton application used for planning and managing well and wellbores. I was on the UX design team to create updated iconography for the new implementation of a ribbon control within the style guidance of the application color and symbol palette.

The Process

I was given a demonstration of the current product and explained how new iconography was needed to communicate the complex concepts outlined in the new release. I utilized the style guide elements and developed a document to separate out the different concepts in to groups to accurately convey their usage in the application. Deep research and conversations with SMEs gave me the direction needed to create the underlying concepts to build the complex communication upon.

By color grouping and fidelity grouping the symbols used in each icon description, I was able to achieve a cohesive and modern icon system for the updated project and allowed for additional icons to be generated for the categorization I had developed.

The Results

The product is in the last phases of development and client user feedback has
been well received across all parts of this application release. Other projects have taken a similar approach to solving the visual icon problem, and the product has gained a visual consistency that users are glad to have.

Identity, Icons, graphics, & UX Direction

B.A.M. is a product of Halliburton and provides management of well and wellbore barriers during the many phases of well completion. Myself, UX lead, and development team have taken this product form proof-of-concept to a third release and market ready.

The Process

I was tasked with the research to discover and tag all barriers being regulated currently and which ones the government has added to the list. In this research I read through a number of diagrams, patent documents, and SME white papers to gain the accurate knowledge for drawing the technical illustrations of different well configurations while in the production phase. I then determine the placement of callouts to each of the barrier location on the illustrations. From that base, I was able to create the icon system needed to digest all the information quickly while engineers are working on a well. I used grouping by color usage and shape to visually differentiate the areas on the well that the icon barriers represented.

Once development was implementing those icons and callouts within the UI, I aided in the UX efforts to plan the modal box to allow users to view, filter, and assign a primary and secondary barrier to meet compliance standards. At the end of release 1.0, I was able to add additional polish to the technical illustrations and develop an identity and brand graphics like splash screen and dashboard backgrounds to the product.

The Results

The application has since added much more functionality and barrier types that allow for real time components and multiple database connections being run on the system. the product owner and manger have been able to take this product and gain market share due to the functionality and the rich UI and graphics implemented by myself and the UX team.

Mobile Application Graphics, Identity, & Icons

Dateventure is a product of Not Realistic But Real, LLC. It is a chose your own adventure game with HD video streaming throughout the playing of the game. Its premise is a series of date scenarios that could bring light to the dos and don’ts of dating through a game.

The Process

The research process had its start around different conversations about dating scenarios and how one would react to them. From these discussions the concept was born. I was tasked with developing a cool, modern look with a professional delivery. Vector imagery was chosen to complement and not over power the video aspect of the application. First I created the identity with a subtle twist of humor; where the crown on the D, when flipped over, was women’s underwear called boy shorts. the victory prize of for some or a crown for others.

The badges then were created to reflect the various personas associated with dating like being a clown, prince charming, or jumping the gun. The 20+ badges and additional graphics gave shape to the game as a viable contender in the mobile app/game world.

The Results

The game has recently launched and has been gaining momentum in the marketplace. So far the success of the game changes daily, but the visual concept has remained solid. They are moving onto making the game work on a variety of mobile platforms and now have a site you can go check out for more information. http://dateventure.org.

Identity Redesign

Baron Energy, Inc. is an independent oil and gas exploration, exploitation and development company from Central Texas.

The Process

The research process began with gaining an understanding of what the client was actually trying to accomplish with the redesign. Three things resonated from that research: 1) solid and durable, 2) marketing and employee materials, and 3) A Texas and American feel to the identity. I addressed each concept with variations that would work on different usages of the logo within marketing materials and digital media.

The Results

After going through the iterative process, an identity was selected that Baron Energy, Inc. felt best represented all the elements they wanted to convey to their market competitors and to potential investors. The additional concepts portrayed were: industrial, professional, reliable, traditional, and energy focused. Baron Energy, Inc. has since used the redesigned identity in all aspects of their facing services and presentations. You can read more information about the great services they offer at http://baronenergy.com.

I received an email today notifying me that eight of my identities/logos will be featured in a new book series called “Master Library: Typography & Enclosures”. This fourth edition book is being created by the authors of the LogoLounge book series. LogoLounge books are the best selling books under Rockport Publishing. The notification included:

“What is the Master Library series?
Like our existing (and continuing) LogoLounge book series, the new Master Library books will bring you exemplary logo design work from Designs around the world. Our first book in the series, Initials and Crests, is at the publisher as we write and promises to be a new best selling series from Rockport in the model of LogoLounge.

Unlike our original series, though, each book in the Master Library series will focus on a very specific logo design category, to wit:

Initials & Crests
Animals and Mythology
Shapes and Symbols
Typography
People
Nature and Food
Arts and Culture

We hope to include your work in the fourth book of the Master Library series”

The book will only feature 3,000 logos. Consider the amount of quality logos they chose from – over 140,000 and counting – you can see the significance of inclusion in the book. And I will have 12 identities featured in this edition! I am completely honored and excited to be able to be in this publication and hope to continue to have my work published in their series of books. And one of my personal favorites, Black White Conspiracy, that I created with my co-conspirator Ryan Cuppernull was selected. Look for this book to be available for purchase late 2011.

Web Application Icons & UI Development

e-MDs is a software company developing EMR web-based technology for large scale organization and practice usage. They are providing innovative web technologies to the medical field to increase efficiency in record keeping and billing.

The Process

I was tasked with aiding the UI team in compiling the various iconography systems created at that point into a vector based set. This set needed to have consistency in color palette and size requirements. I also was tasked with creating HiFi wireframes for hand off to the front-end development team. In my preparation for the project, I had to review all visual inventory and technical documentation of the application up to that point. I recorded the interaction of key controls and how they would leverage their functionality moving forward. This allowed me to generate the updated visuals and wireframes quick and concise.

The Results

The end result allowed the front-end development team to gain momentum and be a sprint ahead of development with the skin and visual elements already in place. The project had a cohesive icon style with a style guide for implementation. Important and pivotal HiFi wireframes gave more depth to the LoFi wireframes as they were coupled with BA documentation for the developers.
